Maybe I don't have trained eyes, but how do you tell ANY difference between some of the athletes and the events? Some events have an objective way to measure performance (a clock), but after you've watched one or two people ski down a mountain, and neither one crashes, do you remember all the ways their paths were different? In speed skating, I noticed how you can cross over the blue lines sometimes (on a straightaway?), and it doesn't seem to be against the rules. The skiers have gone outside the blue a few times, but I think only the red flags mark a boundary. Speaking of which, why do some of them hit the flag sticks with their poles? I'm guessing to avoid crashing into them?
Snowboarding kind of makes sense. Those tricks start to look similar after a while, though. You know the girls aren't really trying for a 1080 (three full rotations), although one seemed to accidentally pull it off yesterday. The guys are up to 1620 degrees of rotation or something crazy. I think that number is 4 1/2 full turns. Somehow, you also get credit for a "720" if your board isn't facing forward on the landing? To me, it looks like about 700 to 705 degrees of spin.
Luge looks like suicide. I know I've been traveling over 80 MPH before, but probably only on a train or inside a plane. I rarely try to drive that fast (my car's suspension is too old). Yet, you can go that fast on a sled, banking around turns of ice, and not crash? I suppose that's the point, or these guys know how to push the limits of being out of control.
Figure skating is mostly subjective. I did think some of the highest scores were the better performances, but how are you supposed to notice any difference between skaters at that level? Unless they fall on a jump (the most I've seen is maybe two falls in one performance), what are they judging? Some jumps land awkwardly, or do fewer rotations than what was declared before they started skating. The Russian girl can put her body in crazy positions and spins so fast, that I'm surprised she doesn't vomit or fall down from dizziness. Her scores were the best in the team competition, so how would she not be a medalist for the individual part? I don't know who else might skate that didn't participate in the team competition, or there might be a few people who held back on purpose. Our one skater looked like Cinderella the other night (bluish sparkly dress). I forget if Putin applauded for her. I think he did for the American ice dancers. Those shots are funny, because you almost see him trying not to smile, and his clapping looks slow or robotic.
Other than that, what are all the red designs on the Russian jackets? I've been trying to figure that out for a while. I started reading about the Cyrillic alphabet once, but hardly remember all the letters. English seems strange among the world languages. There's no "W" character in most of the other alphabets, but a different letter kind of makes an "oo" sound (which looks like "Double O" when you type it that way). "P" in a few alphabets (like Greek and Cyrillic) is the "rhuh" sound. There's no "J" in a lot of languages. That's why you have "Yulia," instead of "Julia." The name "Jesus" doesn't even sound that way in Hebrew or Greek. The Greek version I've seen has four vowels ("Iesou," if you made an inexact transliteration to English). Spanish has the "j" character, but it makes the "h" sound. Their "h" is silent, unless you count "ch," which is considered one letter for them.
So, there's probably a boring language lesson. I'm supposed to be studying instead of watching sports.
