I'm not sure if that's going to make it a better game than usual. For a few years, it's hardly looked like either team was trying to win. Certain players always opt out. I'm not sure if Tom Brady was even picked this year, but he'd be one example. It looks like Brady was picked, but he's listed as "I" (as in injured?). Almost every player should be hurting at this point of the season, right? Most of the 49ers look like they opted out. A few really did get hurt in the Seattle game. No Adrian Peterson, either?
They still play the game before the Super Bowl, which means arguably the best player in the NFL (Peyton Manning) won't be at the Pro Bowl.
The way it worked was that Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice were team captains. They had help from co-captains, and even a few fans you wouldn't recognize were part of the process.
It looked like two of my fantasy guys were the top picks (Drew Brees - Team Rice, Jamaal Charles - Team Sanders). Deion had J. J. Watt as the defensive captain. Jerry picked Robert Quinn. I don't think he gets much coverage out in St. Louis, but I believe he led the NFC in sacks this season.
Deion went for QBs in the top spots - Andrew Luck and Cam Newton. It's weird how I don't think of Cam Newton as a top 5 QB. He was part of the team that beat me in the "Fantasy Bowl," though. I guess he can score points running even if his passing stats aren't like a Drew Brees.
Team Rice picked Jimmy Graham, which seemed kind of obvious (since Brees is their QB).
As it went on, there were votes showing fans think Team Sanders is loaded. On defense, I'd sort of agree. He started with Robert Mathis, but Jerry stole him away in a trade after the draft was over. I mostly remember the secondary: Darrelle Revis, Patrick Peterson, Eric Berry, Eric Weddle.
Team Rice seems more balanced on offense. They have a really good run specialist: DeMarco Murray (also on my fantasy team after my cousin dropped him). Then, Matt Forte and LeSean McCoy are guys who can pick up any kind of yards from scrimmage (rushing or receiving). I know McCoy led the whole league in yards from scrimmage, but it seemed like that was because Jamaal Charles sat out in week 17. Team Rice has some awesome wide receivers: Josh Gordon (undrafted fantasy stud who ended up on my team), Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, Larry Fitzgerald.
The rules of the draft were interesting. Every team had to end up with the same number of players at each position, so instead of "picking" the last guy, a few of them were "assigned" to the other team. The biggest surprise was probably how Larry Fitzgerald wasn't picked at the WR spot. I'd put him ahead of someone like DeSean Jackson or the young Jeffery guy for the Bears. Deion never picked a tight end, so two of them got assigned to him: Jordan Cameron and Jason Witten. The most confusing thing might be how Cameron Jordan (a defensive player) and Jordan Cameron were both named to the Pro Bowl. I believe they're on different teams, though. Then, try to remember or pronounce names like Vontaze Burfict or Alterraun Verner.
So, I don't know which team to favor. Jerry Rice might have the best two QBs not named Peyton: Drew Brees and Philip Rivers. After Jamaal Charles, Deion has Eddie Lacy and Alfred Morris. That doesn't sound as deep as McCoy, Forte, Murray. Tony Gonzalez and Jimmy Graham (Team Rice) sound better than Cameron and Witten. Does defense usually decide this game? I remember one score than got up to 55-52. Plus, the pass rushing rules are supposed to be different. Deion does seem to have a lot of defensive studs (I didn't even mention Luke Kuechly). Justin Tucker (Team Sanders) was my fantasy kicker, but I think Stephen Gostkowski actually attempted more total FGs.
Really, when you get down to the best players in the whole league, it's hard to tell which team might be "better" until they start playing.
