Did this trip yesterday to try it out and loved it, maybe you guys have run it in the past? Put in below the Horseshoe Dam in Shannock, you can catch a nice set of rapids and waterfalls now that the old damn at Lower Shannock Falls was removed a while back. Followed the river down through Carolina and the rapids there, down to rt. 91 and the play wave there. Then a few miles of slow moving, mostly flat to Wood River junction and on to run the old damn at Burdickville and the pull out. About 7 miles on a nice afternoon, including sightings of deer, beaver, osprey, a fisher cat and a nice rainbow trout for dinner- definitely recommend it for anyone who hasn't had the chance, would go again
Careful in Shannock....the old dam site contains a lot of sharp blasted rock. They dumped a lot of it in there when they "restored" the former damsite for "fish passage"...They made a real mess of it. Duke
Drove by the old dam site in Shannock the other day. The water was too low to run the rapid, but the town did have an excavator over there scratching around the base of the rapid- hopefully to get rid of that rock and clean out some of the mess, but we'll see...waiting for a hurricane- Pat
Pat, that is a great section of the river, a few of us did last 2 New Years ago right at the start of the big snow storm. Jim S made a fire at Carolina site and provided treats.
You would also like the section downstream from Potter Hill, it has some nice rapids in White Rock mill race and coming down to Westerly (more rapids at low tide, if you can time it).
