Got a surprise email from Mike R. and Elaine A. Saturday night looking to run Otter Brook on Sunday. Worked out great for me - I spent Saturday painting my daughter’s bedroom, so I was ready for some paddling. I've run Otter Brook a couple of times in the past and remembered it as a narrow creek-like river with lots of waves. Either I remembered it wrong, or they were releasing more water last time I was there. At yesterday’s release level (300 cfs) there were lots of rocks to dodge, petty of eddies to catch, and a few places to practice surfing - but not a lot of waves. We put-in around 11:00 and pretty much had the river to ourselves. A small group of paddlers from the MVP put-in in front of us. I thought we would bump into them at one of the playspots downstream, but we never saw them again. We did see a couple of kayakers coming down after us, but I believe I was the only open boater on the river. Elaine and I had a good time bopping down the river. As usual, I was pretty successful in hitting every rock, and missing most of the surfs. Mike was bored out of his mind most of the time, and became the unofficial trip photographer. He did find a couple of spots that could catch his interest – like the waves beneath the Otter Ledge. Overall, a great day – some pictures here: http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/571465009wpRvbe http://www.woonsocket.org/otter.html
