Had a good time on the Branch River with Joe S., Ken F. and Mike B. – 2 canoes, 2 kayaks. We met at the dam in Harrisville around noon. As we unloaded our boats, a small group from the nearby library gathered to watch us head downstream - I guess they don't see many paddlers in January. We ran the first rapid – Whipple Drop - without any problems and headed for the portage at the Glendale Dam. Mike warned us that there would be ice in the dead water behind the dam, and he wasn’t kidding. The river was completely frozen over for a least ¼ mile. We found a trail close to shore and pulled our boats over the ice and through the woods down to the take-out. After a quick break for lunch, we headed out again. For the next 3 miles, the river is mostly quickwater with two short rapids – the Glendale rapid and the Atlas Pallet or Mohegan rapid. Everyone ran the rapids clean and headed down to the portage at the second dam. Once again, we found at least ¼ mile of ice, and once again, we got out close to shore and pulled our boats over the ice and through the woods to the take out. Except for Joe’s seal launch down a steep curving slope at the next put-in, the rest of the trip was uneventful. We pulled into the take-out at around 4:00 and shuttled back to get the cars. I didn’t take any pictures (maybe Joe did), but there is some video here: http://www.woonsocket.org/branchnew.html Good time.
