Easy WhiteWater Lower Deerfield on May 20th

At this time each year we start off the summer with the lower Deerfield run. Sat. May 20th.
Its usually a large group of paddlers 15+. About 5 miles. 2.5 to 3 hours.
Meet at the "Zoar Picnic area" at 12 noon to shuttle the cars to the take-out.
All safety gear required. Please remember your Helmets and PFD's. Its a 2 hour ride and don't want to send anyone home for lack of safety gear.
the trip is rated Class I&II. Also, Check the message board for last minute time changes based on the Dam release info the night before.

Jim,
I am interested in this trip; I am a WW beginner but experience in touring boats. Can you give me directions to get there? Anything else I should know? Thanks

Hi Hector:
The Zoar picnic area is on the Deerfield River below the rapid Zoars Gap. From RI the easiest way is RT 146 to Mass Pike to Rt 91 and get off Exit 27??? Rt 2 Mohawk Trail. Follow Rt 2 to the small town of Charlemont. You will see other boaters in Charlemont. Go about 1 mile past Charlemont and turn right on the access road to Monroe, Readsville Vt. Go about 4 miles and the picnic grounds is on your left. The trip is easier than the West River which you had asked me about. You should check a state road map as my directions could be off slightly. Talk to Jim if you need to caravan up. The directions are easy once you have gone once.

Boat handling skills required for fast moving water. Should have self-rescue skills or a roll. The recent rain plus, a dam release this weekend should make this trip more challenging than years past.
Directions for the Deerfield river can be found in the Flatwater site under "flat water directions" then, Deerfield river.
FYI, the water will be very cold and paddlers should have gear/clothing for immersion or recovery.
