Blackstone

Hey, I am new to the area (going to law school at RWU) and am looking for information about any local whitewater spots. I am a solid 4+ boater so dont be shy. Any information would be appreciated.
Also, does anyone have any information on the Blackstone. I have heard about it, but have no idea what the ideal levels are, what the hazards are, what gauges to look at. Thanks

There is not much whitewater on the Blackstone River. You must be referring to the Blackstone Gorge. AMC River Guide rates the Gorge as class VI-V rapids in high water. I've never done it, so I don't know. The Gorge is located at the end of County Street in Blackstone, MA.

Hi Colin:
Most of our WW paddlers have graduated to other careers- other places. Two local ww rivers in Mass with 4 rapids would be the Quaboag and the MIllers Funnel section. If you have the time a classic class 4 run would be the upper Hudson River from Indian Lake down. You would have almost 14 miles of continuous rapids with other boaters who could give you a lift. It is a 5-6 hour trip from here and we have not run it in several years.

Yes the Blackstone Gorge is a short class 3+ rapid when the water is turned on. Most of the water supposedly was diverted for a hydro project and there are only a few release dates. Because the releases were schedulded for a few weekend dates, no one has kept track of when they are. You may want to call DEM to verify. you will probably have to beat the bushes to find out.
