After actually scouting it this time, I am convinced that the reason I got as far as I did through the Funnel last time was nothing more than pure dumbass luck. Had I scouted it last time, I probably wounldn't have run it.
The river was about half a foot lower than last time, and maybe that made it look worse. But this was the first rapid that I portaged out of genuine concern for my safety rather than just chickening out. There were just too many nasty areas that you wanted to be nowhere near. Get off your line at the top and you could be pretty much screwed. There were a couple of huge pourovers leading right into nasty looking holes. Maybe it was just at this level, but this rapid was not just big waves to ride to the bottom. Too technical for me with too many possible bad consequences.
