Strainer is a tree that has fallen into the river, often blocking a good portion of the channel. It's called a strainer because it allows water through, but not large solid objects (such as kayakers). Even in mild current, the force of the river can really build up quickly on any object that gets caught against the strainer. And underwater branches can also hold kayakers.
Bottomline- potentially deadly river hazard to avoid at all costs!
