I walked the course last night at 5pm and fences look good but I sincerely hope that copious amounts of sand or chippings will be laid down after fence 3 coming off the rugby fields and onto the old course where there are a lot of ruts (3 to 4" deep) running accross and along the course. With no running rails to mark the course out after the open ditch, it is difficult to know where we will be taken to line up for the next two fences(still not in evidence) accross the airfield but I can imagine that this corner will be pretty sharp. I also wonder if the last couple of races may be bothered by the position of the sun which was blinding last night at 5pm right in line with the last two fences!?? Majority of the course was gd/firm.

I too walked the course Wednesday afternoon and agree with your comments on the ruts going on to the old course - they greatly concerned me too!! I also have concerns over the large number of, what I assume are flattened mole hills, on the home straight, which provide some pretty firm patches amongst the slightly better grass areas. I was a bit disappointed that the course hadn't been completed because I went to see the new layout etc. (we were racing on the course-walk Sunday). I presume the course goes quite a long way on to the airfield hence no fences built yet on that part of the course?? I, for one, will be frantically rain dancing until the weekend as the going was good/firm, firm in places yesterday. Sadly I don't think that my dancing is going to be up to much so will be off to wetter Wales but I wish you all a successful and safe meeting.

Please remember there are horse that run on fast ground. I walked the course yesterday and like yourselves I was concerned about the ground before and after the open ditch. I beleave today there is a huge amount of work being done on the course. I was told that last night the rugby pitch area was going to be spiked and watered and again today if it was needed. The fences cannot go on the air strip till 5pm tonight as the gliders still use it today, it all adds up to a nightmare for the people involved so I for one take my hat of the you!! I am sure alot will be learned from running the meeting tomorrow, so good luck to all.

Message from Parham this evening: "An inch of water has just been put on the course between the winning post and the Rugby Club entrance, another inch will be put on tonight. We believe this will make this part of the course perfect."
