David R.J and I have, over the years, agreed on many things including our own short comings. Once again I find myself nodding in agreement, but worrying that it will all fall on deaf ears. I have already said on this forum that the sport must be run by a central comittee in the SE. As I am aware no other area faces exactly the same problems that we do.
A step in the right direction would be for the existing hierachy to put all hunts in the picture as to what will happen unless major change takes place. I am not saying they would but if the most profitable meetings put their heads in the sand they could find themselves without the goose that lays the golden egg.
Nick- Our area has been the envy of the rest- I am not sure if it still is- largely due to being the first in the country to have fence stewards organized on an area basis, area scales and other equipment, area medical officers and weighing room staff and also a suppoters club (DRJ was on the first committee).
S.D.- No course in the SE has everything going for it. However there are pros and cons. Get the right people running it and it would be good for owners, always assuming that all the horses wanted to go the same way round. One of the draw backs is that you cannot attract decent crowds to courses that run several meetings, although if one of those meetings was over Easter it could well pay its way for the rest, much like several racecourses do.
If we did manage to get a more sophisticated profit sharing system in place I would suggest that it was done on car park takings alone so that the hunts who try hardest to create sponsorship and advertising income benefit over those who dont. We would ,unfortunately, have to use an independent to count the takings, which I think some hunts already do.
The fur might fly but I have little confidence we shall see much change.
See you all at Folkestone.
