Just a quick mention for an old friend of us all. Howard Jarvis was still riding when I had my first ride and then, as now, he was always thoroughly entertaining. I cannot ever remember him having a cross word with anyone which, if your a starter, is well nigh impossible. His good humoured, friendly approach to the job has calmed the nerves of many a first time jockey over the years. He has taken the inevitable criticism and the all too seldom praise in exactly the same manner. Believe you me there are more granstand starters than there are jockeys.
I know that he will still attend every point to point but it will take some getting use to not having him call the boys and girls in. I wish his successors the very best of luck but I am afraid it is no insult to say you will never fill Howards boots, leave alone have them so clean.
