Hi Sarah,
I'm an SAS S'99 alum and I can't even imagine what would be going through my head if something of this magnitude had happened before I was getting ready to sail. I think it's great that you are still so excited about your upcoming voyage and I hope that doesn't change. The SAS program has sailed before in times of instability and I can assure you, the safety of everyone on board is ISE's number one priority. I was aboard the SS Universe Explorer when NATO accidentally bombed the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia. Actually, I was en route from Beijing to Shanghai after visiting the Great Wall and did not hear about it until the next morning, when I woke up to find a "memo" from our dean explaining the events that had taken place and what security measures were in place. Obviously, being in China during a time of great anti-American sentiment was unnerving and even frightening at times. But I feel that as far as safety measures are concerned, our safety and well-being were definitely put first.
Believe me, SAS will make sure you and your fellow SASers' safety is their number one priority... and if they feel that it is at all at risk, they will alter the itinerary.
Hope this helps quell some of your concerns! Have an amazing voyage.
Stephanie
