Starting pipe smoking

I am off to University next month and at last I will be able to start smoking a pipe, something I have wanted to do for a long time. I would be pleased to obtain any advice from older pipesmokers. For example is it generally better to start with a straight or bent pipe? What tobaccos would be the best ones to try initially? Any other information on filling and smoking a pipe would be appreciated. Thanks, David
