Hi Jim!
The first step is to fill the bowl gently, step by step. The second is to puff slowly. Third, after few minutes you have to remove the tobacco, very gently, in order to get uniform burning, otherwise it will burn just in the center. Clean the stem at least once in the week. The practice will teach you until reaching a pleasant level.
