Where to start?

Which shop in London (East, West, South, North: everywhere at Underground distance) wuold you recommend for a friendly start?
I have been given the name of Marc Burrows at Dunhill in Jermyn Street. My concern is that it would be a bit too expensive (overpriced?).
Have you got a better idea where to look for?
