Having asked Clive Humm the same question a few years ago, I took his advice and use Lord Sheraton Pure Beeswax Balsam - its a furniture polish. Just the tiniest smear is all it takes and it polishes up to a lovely shine. It smells like there's turpentine in it as a solvent but it hasn't had any detrimental affect on my pipes.
