I wrote to my MP (Theresa Villiers, Con) a fortnight ago about the Labour Party's attempt to remove Parliament from the legislative process and to thank her for voting against the smoking ban. She replied:" Thank you for the comments in your letter about the ban on smoking in public places. I am grateful for your support on this issue and appreciate your kind words about the stance I have taken. As you are aware I voted against a full ban when this matter was debated in the House of Commons last month. Like you, I believe that it places too heavy a restraint on individual freedom. I also do not believe that a ban is the best way to combat the problem of smoking in public places. I would prefer to see the government seeking voluntary, not statutory, solutions to public health problems such as smoking."
