Thank you very much. I think that you are right: the bowl on my cracked DC has narrowed considerably. I do go them a scrape every so often, but it is a bit hit and miss. I will try to follow your advice to avoid similar damage to my latest Ashton.
: All I can say is ream out your
: pipes once a month or so,
: leaving about 1.5mm of carbon
: in them.
: The best reamer is the Dunhill
: stainless steel adjustable
: reamer.
: The buttner is meant to be the
: best but after time it cuts
: into the bottom of the bowl.

: I've had a good quality briar
: for a few months, and exactly
: the same has just happened. I
: think I have an explanation,
: though. If you burn a really
: hot-smoking tobacco in a bowl
: which has not had enough cake,
: perhaps, the smouldering
: tobacco will bake the inside,
: and will not be absorbed by
: the carbon. That is the
: general tale I've heard, but
: if anyone else (with more
: experience) can add, I'd also
: like to find out why. Many
: thanks.

: I admit that I don't look
: after
: my pipes very well, but I
: don't bang them about either.
: None the less the bowls of two
: of my favourite pipes have
: cracked in the last couple of
: years (an Ashton and a
: two-note Don Carlos, so you
: can imagine my irritation). On
: both occasions I have just
: picked them up from where I
: left them and found the
: breaks. I wondered whether
: this happened to any of you
: and whether there was any
: explanation.
