All I can say is ream out your pipes once a month or so, leaving about 1.5mm of carbon in them.
The best reamer is the Dunhill stainless steel adjustable reamer.
The buttner is meant to be the best but after time it cuts into the bottom of the bowl.
: I've had a good quality briar
: for a few months, and exactly
: the same has just happened. I
: think I have an explanation,
: though. If you burn a really
: hot-smoking tobacco in a bowl
: which has not had enough cake,
: perhaps, the smouldering
: tobacco will bake the inside,
: and will not be absorbed by
: the carbon. That is the
: general tale I've heard, but
: if anyone else (with more
: experience) can add, I'd also
: like to find out why. Many
: thanks.

: I admit that I don't look
: after
: my pipes very well, but I
: don't bang them about either.
: None the less the bowls of two
: of my favourite pipes have
: cracked in the last couple of
: years (an Ashton and a
: two-note Don Carlos, so you
: can imagine my irritation). On
: both occasions I have just
: picked them up from where I
: left them and found the
: breaks. I wondered whether
: this happened to any of you
: and whether there was any
: explanation.
