I've had a good quality briar for a few months, and exactly the same has just happened. I think I have an explanation, though. If you burn a really hot-smoking tobacco in a bowl which has not had enough cake, perhaps, the smouldering tobacco will bake the inside, and will not be absorbed by the carbon. That is the general tale I've heard, but if anyone else (with more experience) can add, I'd also like to find out why. Many thanks.
: I admit that I don't look after
: my pipes very well, but I
: don't bang them about either.
: None the less the bowls of two
: of my favourite pipes have
: cracked in the last couple of
: years (an Ashton and a
: two-note Don Carlos, so you
: can imagine my irritation). On
: both occasions I have just
: picked them up from where I
: left them and found the
: breaks. I wondered whether
: this happened to any of you
: and whether there was any
: explanation.
