If I had my choice Johnny Mathis would be my top pick for Kennedy Center Honors. |
Honors have been announced for rock veterans Marty Balin and Cher - albeit from disparate sources.
Cher will be fêted December 2 at the Kennedy Center Honors. The announcement cranks up the buzz already being generated by the 72-year old legend whose biographical jukebox musical recently played its pre-Broadway run in Chicago - after previewing through November The Cher Show is set to officially open on Broadway the day after the Kennedy Honors - and although Cher's role in the current Mamma Mia 2 is an extended cameo at the film's end, with her turn as Meryl Streep's mother ("Cher exists outside of time" - director Ol Packer) Cher is widely credited with walking off with the entire movie.
Marty Balin's honor is somewhat less prestigious, the Jefferson Airplane founder having been announced as a recipient at the 24th annual Milley Awards. Since 1988 the Mill Valley Arts Commission has annually honored distinguished members of the arts community who have ties to the Marin County city of Mill Valley where, prior to relocating to Florida in 1999, Balin had resided (at the same house) since 1968. As a Milley recipient Balin will join the company of a wide-range of musicians: Rita Abrams (whose 1970 single Mill Valley credited to Miss Abrams & the Strawberry Point Third Grade Class reached #90 on the Billboard Hot 100), Bill Champlin, George Duke, Mimi Farina, Jon Hendricks, latterday Beach Boys member Scott Matthews, Maria Muldaur, and Bob Weir: oldies fans will also note that actress Kathleen Quinlan - Peg in American Graffiti - has been honored with a Milley. The Milley Awards are scheduled for October 21 at the Mill Valley Community Center.
