Re: Who Is/Was Bobby Stevens?
Not sure about the factuality of the article, but they sure could us a good spell checker. Unless, of course, Black Pear was the original working title of the song. BTW, not sure if everybody knows, but Sonny Charles was a lead and backing vocalist on a couple of Steve Miller's tours and latter day albums. I saw him and he was terrific but unfortunately he didn't sing Black Pearl or Black Pear.
I didn't know about any of this myself. Did a search and found some good info at http://www.onehitwondersthebook.com/?page_id=13960
that I think may be of interest.
In Beverly Cardinals' earlier threat about songs you love but others don't know, I mentioned Sonny Charles & The Checkmates Ltd. song "Love Is All I Have To Give"... in my humble estimation one of the best things Phil Spector ever did, and far, far superior to "Black Pearl"...
So, I went to that 'tube' place to listen one more time, and in reading the comments found out that it was NOT Sonny Charles, but Bobby Stevens who not led the group at the time, but was the co-author along with Phil, and also the lead singer on the song...
Several folks commented that they couldn't understand why the song didn't chart.. and I ask the same question.
I found several songs by a "Bobby Stevens" on the tube, but it doesn't seem like it's the same person.
Does anyone have any further information on this guy with the incredible voice?
