Second, if you don't know the whole story, and obviously neither you nor I do, what the family requests should not be criticized. I'll go into detail later.
Third, yes, Eugene made ok money at performances but he still had to split that money no less than 5 ways, more if there were musicians to pay.
How often did a guy with 2 hit records to his name get paid well for performing? Not often, especially not in his advancing years. I hadn't seen him advertised at a concert around here in at least 4 years. Maybe a decade ago he was still getting $2000 for himself out of a performance, doing maybe 40 gigs a year then. That's not a lot of money, especially when you live in New York.
Gene had also signed away royalties and publishing royalties to shady managers back in the 60s, so he never actually made a dime off of his biggest hits.
Gene apparently left no life insurance, he had no burial plot set in advance, he had a lot of unpaid debts, and, knowing full well how much my own father's death and funeral cost my mother, I can tell you that dying is not cheap.
The money is being used to pay for all of that, plus his autopsy, plus bringing in his extended family for the funeral.
The family also is well aware that no matter what they set the goal at, they probably wouldn't reach it, so that is why they set the goal so high.
Feel free to contribute to the gofundme, or don't, but don't criticize the family for trying to honor his legacy as best as they can.
