My Red Books are stored in the loft, so I can't confirm exactly, but DL (David ?) Thompson retired in the late sixties, having spent some time in hospital, from memory it must have been 1968. He died shortly afterwards from throat cancer: as someone else mentioned he was a heavy pipe smoker, along with Eric Gledhill and Les Clarke.
The fug enveloping the Staff Room at break time was notorious.
