Yes, indeed, Oboe it was... He played in the school orchestra on Friday Assemblies and also in the orchestra pit in all the Gilbert & Sullivan productions.
He didn't retire in the 1950's as I am pretty sure he was there when I left school in 1967.
Excellent teacher altogether. I also fondly recall his clever "line" system. The basic line was: "There are few things more irritating to the well-ordered mind than to see a boy idly disporting himself at improper moments"...To avoid cheating, or repeat submission of earlier impositions, a key word such as "idly" would be replaced by "foolishly" and this word, together with the number of lines awarded and the miscreant's name would be entered into a little notebook with the due date.
