An Old Boy to be proud of. I played alongside him in the cricket and hockey "Firsts"...I say alongside but actually, most of us were well behind him when it came to ability. I remember with a ready smile several things about Bob. His father would sit on the boundary at home games and tut at us lesser mortals, as one by one we trudged back, having less patience in waiting for the easy ball or having less bravery and skill to step inside and play the leg ball off one's toes. His slow ball was an absolute masterpiece of cunning (as many fellow professionals later found, especially in the Sunday League.) His own cricket bag was larger than the official First Eleven bag, he had boots for batting AND for bowling..well fair enough...but trousers as well??..and two boxes??? That really sets a man apart! Let us not forget that Bob was also a great hockey player...
just a bat with a curly end after all.
But as well as his superior sporting skills I shall remember him as a quiet, gentle, honest and encouraging person whose subsequent career has given pleasure to many and made us all proud to have known him.
