hide a part of a hero picture

I am making an scene on which the hero is on a bed and he gets up. As changing from an npc to the hero or from a hero to another one, would make him disapear for a few seconds. I am thinking on using a whole picture set to changes of pictures as natural as possible. Could someone explain me how to make an animation using a whole picture set (8 pictures) without making the hero walking to an X,Y location ? As I am very good to make myself missunderstood feel free asking any further question if you don't see what I mean. As always thanks very much in advance !
