this is easy, bestfriend, you already know everything about him you know how to mesh, and if it's just too weird you can go back to your friendship like it never happened, just be sure to tell your friend that if it doesnt work out that you will always want to stay close friends K! 
trust me i know i have been dating my boyfriend for almost 2 years now and he was my bestfriend first, almost like yours. . .
