Posted by Andy Blackard I am trying to determine if and ELIZA BRADWAY/BLACHETT/BLANSHARD is the widow of my ancestor CHARLES BLACKARD from Franklin County. Our surname was nearly always misspelled but CHARLES BLACKARD (with any spelling) seems to suddenly disappear in 1790. The 1790 Franklin, NC census lists: Eliza Bradway (age 47) with herself + 1 Bradway, Eliz'a.................................0-1-4-0-0 Williby Black who is almost certainly WILLOUGHBY BLACKARD is listed on the 1782 Warren NC tax list near SPENCER SNOW for whom, Willoughby's father CHARLES BLACKARD posted a marriage bond. 1783 Granville County Marriages: Then in Franklin, Elizabeth Blachett proved will of James Mayto in 1785. Witness Bill Blanchard. Charles had a son named WILLIAM BLACKARD and lived close to the MAYO family. 1790 ELIZA BRADWAY on the Franklin County census. Then in 1797 in Franklin, E. BLANSHARD bought at the estate sale of DAVID JEFFREY whose family can be linked to CHARLES BLACKARD. Then in in 1797 WILLIAM BLANCHED is named on a Warren County estate sale. Again this may be WILLIAM BLACKARD, a son of CHARLES BLACKARD. The names SELF and OWEN also appear which can be linked to the Blackards. WARREN CO NC ESTATE RECORDS JOHN TUCKER Franklin Court Minutes of December Court 1800 "Orderd that the administration of ELIZABETH BLANCHARD sell so much of the perrishable part of the said Decd.s Estate as will be sufficient to discharge the Debts of said Decd. " Then finally in Franklin County, ELIZABETH BLANSHARD dec'd Estate 1801 - Among of the buyers were A. BLANSHARD and JOHN DENT. CHARLES BLACKARD also had links to JOHN DENT and is thought to have had a son named AARON BLACKARD. I cannot find the BLANCHARD family in Franklin County at this time either so I suspect that Blachett, Blanchard, Blanshard and Bradway are more mispellings of BLACKARD in these Franklin County records. I would appreciate any assistance or corrections. thanks, P.S. I have much information (PRIOR TO 1790) on the following Franklin County families who were neighbors or associates of Charles Blackard that I have collected in my research. Please let me know and I'll post more info: SELF, ALSTON, WILLIAMS, HUDSON, BLACK, BLANCET, OWNSBY, HENDERSON, DENT, JEFFRIES, MAYO, WHITE, BLACKMAN, OWEN, SMART

Does anyone know if there really were families named BRADWAY or BLANCHARD in Franklin County before 1800? I am trying to verify that these are misspellings of BLACKARD.
