Charles Blackard was missing from this census so this could possibly be him instead of a Blackley. He was often recorded as Charles Blacker, Blackar, Blackam, Black. I think I have found his family members recorded as Blanshet, Blanchert, Blanchardt, Blackman and Bradway. 1790 NC Granville County, NC Census - Fort Creek District Here's also a name that I cannot identify in the adjacent county, Rockingham. I have found that the spelling is so bad in these early records that you cannot tell sometimes. I have noticed that Blackley is sometimes recorded as Blakeley. Rockingham, NC 1790 U.S. Census Also, I find the name Rackley recorded in some early Bute/Franklin records and wonder if this was supposed to be Blackley. I will post more later when I can check my other research files. The name Brinkley also appears in this area and I think sometimes certain people may have been spelled Brinkley in one tax list and Blackley on the next. The only thing definite that I can say is to expect the spelling to be WRONG at least 80% of the time. Phonetic spelling or using a derivative of any word that the clerk did know how to spell was more common. -andy blackard

I find the name Blackley in coastal Virginia in 1704. This is where most of the settlers of old Granville County seem to have come from. Old Granville was divided into Bute and then Warren/Franklin later.
