I remember visiting a Mr and Mrs Stewart who lived in one of those carriages in the late 1930s. You entered the carriage at the back, the side corridor had been taken out to make a wider living room. I remember that the place smelled of furniture polish and on the sideboard were two Victorian glass vases with long pink glass drops that tinkled when the door opened. The side corridor led down to the compartments, one of which contained a bed with a gold eiderdown. I never saw any of the other compartment. Their son live across the road in a house a little further towards Hightown. if memory serves me right I think he had only one leg. I don't know how my dad knew them, probably from Lumb's where he worked. I still remember this as it was like living in a story book, I don't remember anything else: I was only five or six years old at the time
