- I am just about done building my own exhaust from scratch
Posted by Daze on 11/3/2009, 7:52 pm Forum Moderator
This is the second time I have built my own exhaust but the first one I did, (on the Galaxie) was taking an exhaust I already had from a parts car and modifying it for my application. The exhaust I am building from scratch is on The Mustang, I started with 2 headers, two collectors, two 45 degree elbows, two 24" glasspacks and a 10' stick of 2.25" exhaust pipe. The elbows were cut and welded to form an "X" pipe and then I began cutting and welding up the 10' stick to attach it all together. Rather then buying more elbows or having a local exhaust shop bend the pipe I prefer the cut and rotate method of making bends. If I need a 22 degree bend I cut the pipe at 11 degrees and then turn one of the pieces 180 degrees and weld it back together. In the case of a 90 I make three 30 degree cuts. The end result looks good and should flow almost as well as a mandrel bent piece and way better than a ribbed elbow. I still need to tack it all together and then burn it in. After that it is off to the powder coater to get ceramic coated, this will be one sweet exhaust when I am all done with it.
If it aint broke..... modify it anyway!!!!Mustang tech http://www.dazecars.com http://www.galaxieforum.com

- Building from scratch is fun!

I have built several, mainly for the pickups I have had over the years, using old pipes from junk yards or other vehicles, even some I found along the roads. Getting the right angle can be tricky at times but the more you do the better you get. Sometimes to get a little more curve in a bend, I cut a narrow wedge out of the pipe but not cut all the way through, leaving just enough to hold the pipe together. Once the wedge is removed, you can bend the pipe and weld it back together. May look a little red neckish but just as functional as new. Way to go Daze.

- Years ago I'd buy a handful of mandrel bends and go to it...

did a few sets of headers and system for my '55 PU. It's one more car challenge and just plain fun...takein' nuthin' and make sumpin' useful. Good on you Daze, 'course having the lift is cheatin', I think. BB

Nice job, have you been able to start it up to see what it will sound like? What do you think it will cost to get coated?

- I could easily rase my ceiling to 12' as well and was planning to do just that...

But now I do not see the point. I prefer to sit while I work, in fact even if I could go all the way up with the lift I probably would not.
I have upgraded from the costco laundry detergent bucket to a craftsman rolling stool and it is fantastic. I role around under the car and then when I need to get out from under the lift I role the stool out from under the lift and stand up. Some time I don't even get off the stool when I am clear of the lift, I simply role over to the tool box or grab what ever else I need and then role the stool back under the lift.

- Are you talking about one of these??
Posted by Daze on 11/4/2009, 8:52 pm, in reply to "Tubing benders are faily cheap..." Forum Moderator
Every one I have ever talked to who has tried to use one of these calls it a pipe ruiner or pipe kinker. It is quite possible they didn't know how to correctly use it, I have not used one. I was going to take the pipe down to a local shop and have them put a few bends in, but I figured It was just as easy to cut and weld. especially between the collectors and the "x" pipe where I was not sure what angles I needed. I still have some pipe left and may yet get the 60 degree bends at the end of the exhaust mandrel bent. We will see. As far as the transmission jack, I have a kit that converted a floor jack to a transmission jack and I am going to use it to build my own upright unit. Although at this point I don't really need one. When I put the T5 in this last time I simply picked it up and stabbed it in

- The engine has a fairly lopey cam so with the separate dual exhaust....
Posted by Daze on 11/4/2009, 9:08 pm, in reply to "Re: As promised here are the pictures" Forum Moderator
and the glasspacks it was fairly loud and lopey at idle and really loud, but smooth when I really got on it. I think the "x" pipe will mellow out the sound a lot making it a little less lopey and probably make it a little quieter. But I won't know exactly how it sounds until I get it reinstalled after it is coated. It will cost $175.00 for me to get the headers coated and the main exhaust is $10.00 per linear foot, so about $120.00 as each half of the "X" is about 6' long. I figure $300.00 to do the entire exhaust is a deal

I was thinking that I would want my lift up high enough to stand under. But I think it would be a lot better to have an office chair with wheels under there so I could roll around under the car. Would be more fun and keep me from getting a sore back. I like the bucket too though.
I didn't say it wasn't worth it, I'm just say'n.

That is a pipe bender and should not be used on tubing. Northern and harbor don't have any large tubing benders on their websites, but they may have them in store. Speedway has tubing benders, but it is more for roll cages and does not have any dies larger than 1 3/4.
I am sure Daze could knock one of these out no problem. The dies can be made from hard wood. BobN

You could have purged the pipe with Argon gas and not had that old black crusty stuff inside the pipe . (were you cut out pie shapes and then welded) When ever you make a butt joint weld like that the weld oxidizes on the inside and make a rough joint(inside)...that is if you got really good penetration. What the hay....your building exhaust pipes.. not "tig welding furniture"!! What you got looks good to me too!! 6sally6
If it "crackles" like a Pro Mod..thats ALMOST enough cam!!

Hmmmm, some 2" black pipe, couplings,45's and 90's. Just screw it all together. Might be a little heavy, but what the heck.
