interior exhaust smell Posted by fastback2race on 11/1/2009, 11:36 am 69.232.226.219 i have bad interior exhaust smell in my 66 fastback. I thought it was my old exhaust system so I got a brand new system with hooker supercomp long tubes and 2 1/2 to the rear valance. I don't know how this smell is getting into the car. could it be the cowl I know I got a leak because when I wash my car water drips down my pedals. I'm so frustrated with this car evey time I drive for more than 20 minutes I get a headache.  Post an Intelligent Response

Had an engine re-build and now no problem - at least with the exhaust smell. Also had a similar problem with a leaking "donut" gasket that goes between the manifold and the exhaust pipe. I finally discovered a 2" gap in the trunk lid gasket dead center above the gas cap. Fixed that...no more stinkum. I also have a new trunk gasket. I did notice a little oil on the rear of drivers side head below the valve cover. I wiped it clean but the smell is still there.  Post an Intelligent Response

These cars are highly susceptible to exhaust smell. I suspect it has something to do with air flow over and under the car creating a vacuum someplace. In my case, it really got worse when I lowered the car, and I suspect that this must be related to airflow. In the end my solution came from two things-- sealing EVERY hole under the car to the interior - from the engine compartment, the trunk and underneath-- and I mean EVERY ONE. How I did this-- While the car was gutted, I put a bright light inside the interior shell, shut out the garage lights at night and lay underneath and either welded or seam sealed shut every tiny gap. I also replaced the door and trunk lid weatherstrip, and made sure the thing was tight as a drum. I imagined it should be able to watertight as a boat if I needed it to! Yes, it was a HELL Of a lot of work-- but I had enough. My wife wouldn't ride in the car, and my clothes reeked after I drove even a little while. Number two, I tucked the exhaust as far up under the car as I could and experimented with all sorts of downturn tips till I got the exhaust to stop (what I assume) was swirling under the car and sucking back in. Turned out that keeping the tips under the car, turned somewhat down and not sticking out the back worked the best. It also really helps if your carb is well tuned so that you are not running rich and there is less smell in the first place. I wish I could find that series of posts I made, but it must have fallen off the board's history.  Post an Intelligent Response
