had the front end inspected yesterday and the (haha) non english speaking expert said I need all new tie rods with both ends on both sides and wheel bearings and an alighnment. With the car up on a frame lift and the wheels hanging he pronounced all the shocks and rear springs ok. The rear springs have no bend in them with the car sitting on the wheels but suspended they are bent. How hard its it to change the tie rods myself and let then do the alighnment?

Remove the old tie rods as a unit - meaning an inner, an outer and the adjusting sleeve all at one time. Once off the car, measure from the center of the tie rod back side (easy if there is a zerk) from the outer one to the inner one. Write down the measurement. Then you can unscrew the tie rods from the adjusting sleeve. To do that easily, loosen the two calmps, then drive a small chisel or wide screwdriver into the slot of the adjusting sleeve. It will spread it apart so you can unscrew the tie rods by hand. Install the new tie rods and then adjust them to the smae center-to-center distance. Do not tighten the sleeve until they are installed back on the car. Once they are in place, tighten the sleeve clamps and it will br real close in alignment to where it was before. Then put the car on the ground, be sure it rolls straight forward 10 feet before measuring, and measure the toe. Set it so the front dimension is 1/8" less than the back one. Save the alignment fee if there is no caster and camber work to be done. If the car steers ok and does not pull you are done.

How do you properly check all parts of the front end and the rear suspension to determine what is needed? The inspector at Tire Kingdom put a giant water pump plier on the tie rod end and moved it to show me there was play in that, did the same for the idler arm and pronounced it and the shocks and ball joints and the rear springs to be ok by looking at them.
