Car Runs Good, but gasps when stomped on Posted by Billkubi on 10/22/2009, 11:34 am 98.64.121.136 1968, 289, 4 barrel, headers The car is running good, starts instantly, idles nice, accelerates smooth, sounds great, but GOOSE the gas a little and it hesitates, sneezes out the carb, almost quits and needs a couple quick pumps of the gas to keep it going and get it to catch and take off, then it hauls.... Just got new plugs, will put em in tomorrow or sat. Where do I start..????  Post an Intelligent Response

If it's a holley or early ford it may just need adjusting. Other wise the diaphram is defective. If it's a edlebrock or AFB then the pump will need replacing. Another thing that can improve that sudden accerator action, if it's a Holley is to change shooters. Holley's from 390s up to 750s normally have no. 25 shooters. Going to a 28 makes a BIG difference.  Post an Intelligent Response

If the timing is retarded, or the vacuum advance is not working... or the timing curve is way slow, it can cause similar behavior. It does sound like a lean condition... but(t) The .031 squirters should be fine with a stock like engine. Also, if the accelerator pump is not working... it wouldn't start so easily when cold.  Post an Intelligent Response

As jerry F. pointed out you should check the timing and vacuumn advance as well. You can do a quick check of the accerator pum adjusment by visually checking the pump lever and pump screw contact. Have had the experience of filter being blown out with compressed air and "looking" clean but not enough air flow to do the job. Car ran great with cleaner off but coughed and spluttered when stomped on with cleaner on. Discovered after rebuildind carb twice. Good luck  Post an Intelligent Response

Even if the acc. pump is good and adjusted correctly the acc. circuit must be primed and ready to deliver fuel every time . Most carburetors have a check ball to keep fuel ready to deliver. If this check ball does not keep fuel ready to deliver the fuel level in the acc. circuit drops down to level in bowl thus a hesitation especially first pump until acc circuit passages are full of fuel. After a few moments the acc. circuit fuel drops down to bowl level and no acc first pump. Hopes this makes sense.  Post an Intelligent Response

Sec. #2 drill or .221" Center pivot floats,inverted, Pri. 3/8" or .375" Sec. 13/32" or .406" 3rd. Vacuum reading from warm engine at rear of manifold,get reading divide by 2,if vac reading is 13 divide by 2 equals 6.5, your carb should have a 6.5 power valve. 4th. A 4150/4160 should NOT have a squirter, (shooter) bigger than a 27! And both gaskets installed! If it matters a #25 or #26 will provide better gas milage. 5th. An accelerator pump is to shoot fuel at the boosters(into the bores) to help the carb transition from idle circuit to the power circuit, when the throttle plates open and a vacuum is being created the boosters will shower the venturi with fuel from the power circuit and the fuel that is stored in the fuel bowl. The accelerator arm should move as soon as the arm moves on the cam, fuel should spray the boosters at the same time, a squirter too large depleates the fuel supply too soon, carb stumbles, not enough fuel before the throttle plates open up. 6th. At(WOT)Wide Open Throttle the dimension between the Acc. pump over ride spring and the Acc pump arm should be between .015"and.025" Do an inspection and make some corrections, you should be good to go. I was kinda surprised to find an .031 squirter in there. The holly web site video said that .031 and above were for highly modified motors. Move throttle by hand about 30 degrees while watching squirter's, fuel should squirt out immediately full stream from the very first movement of the throttle.  Post an Intelligent Response

As you press the pedal, that RED CAM that I sent you actuates the lever, which acts upon the spring, which acts upon the lever of the pump diaphragm. As the spring starts to compress, there is a slight lag (bad). If you tighten the spring, the lag time gets shorter. After you get to WOT, the spring is still actuating the lever as the spring expands back to it's uncompressed length. (good) That lets the squirter keep squirting fuel a split second AFTER you reach full throttle, richening the mixture just a little longer. The spring also keeps abrupt pedal action from rupturing the diaphragm of the pump. The spring gives that uncompressible liquid in the pump some "give" so the diaphragm does not blow out. That is why you never want to tighten that spring until it is fully collapsed. You DID install the red cam I sent, right? It does make a difference. This will not do a burn out but it is very peppy Almost all the hesitation is gone. Crane used to sell a kit with lighter distributor springs and an adjustable vacuum advance for under $30. Might check SUMMIT to see if they still have some in stock.
