Thermostat housing Posted by billkubi on 10/8/2009, 12:58 pm 65.9.175.11 1968 289 coupe Pulled the housing off and sure enough there was no thermostat installed, in cleaning the Chrome Plated housing I noticed that there was some deep pitting inside. Can I repair that with JB Weld???  Post an Intelligent Response

Within only two weeks of first start up and I have heard WAY to many people complain about their chrome housings. I might as well not start off with something so many people have problems with! The housing most likely has a retainer lip on it to insure the thermostat fits properly. If not, this technique will work anyway. On a bench grinder or appropriate grinding device, remove the lip from the thermostat and about 1/8" more surface. After you have completed the grinding process, the housing will be unusable and can be thrown away without remorse. Replace with a standard aluminum or cast iron housing and NEVER consider a chromed housing in the future, unless, of course, you are someone who just likes to chase problems all the time. That said, I have a buddy who has a Chrome TStat Housing that seals. He drilled two small holes 90 Degrees from the 2 mounting holes and tapped the manifold for them as well. Bolts it down with the 2 larger bolts from factory, then puts in the 2 small hex head bolts and he has been leak free ever since. The OLDER I get, the FASTER I was.....  Post an Intelligent Response
