Rear Brakes Revisited Posted by lowercasesteve on 9/23/2009, 5:51 pm 209.33.99.100 I finally took MS's suggestion and put new rear brake pads on. They came from my local parts store. The originals were from SSBC and were a lot more metallic. Braking is much better with the softer pads. Now I can actually skid the rear wheels under hard braking. Time to check out the setting on the proportioning valve to see if any changes are needed. Brake engagement is now about an inch lower, but hard. I think I will bleed it again just in case. BTW: the brakes are the large ones for 8" rears. They are the 84-87 SVO/T-Bird rear calipers. One bad part of the SSBC design is that the lower locating pin is right behind the spring. You have to totally remove the caliper from the axle to remove it including the brake line. I also found that the 2 holes in each piston were different distances apart. One fit my all purpose rear disk tool that screws the piston back into the housing. The other was about 1/8" farther apart. I drilled it out a little till the tool fit in the larger hole. I hope I did not compromise anything. The holes are only about 1/8" deep.  Post an Intelligent Response

Posted by Al Newman on 9/26/2009, 4:34 pm, in reply to "Rear Brakes Revisited" 64.105.50.17 LowerCS, I have had occasion to install or trouble shoot maybe a dozen of the SSBC disk brake setups and, as luck would have it, I have NEVER found their system to be correct. It simply amazes me that so many people have had good luck with their stuff. Never did an install that I didn't have to find a part to complete locally. One thing you might check out on your setup is the master cylinder. If it is SSBC, chances are that you have a residual pressure valve in the rear brake port that tends to hold rear pressure like on a drum rear. You might try removing that residual valve or locate an all disk brake master cylinder to use. I found this to be a problem on one of my trouble shoots. I called SSBC for their help, and they said that the master cylinder supplied was for a disk brake (front only) 67 Mustang. When I asked about removing the residual valve and what that would do to their warranty, they said to go ahead if I wished, as there was no warranty on the setup anyway. Heck of a lot of warm fuzzy feelings there, huh? Best, Al Classic Mustangs are full of surprises, and none of them are pleasant.  Post an Intelligent Response
