I hate to hear that about the officer. I'm not sure how big your Dept. is or often a tragedy like this occurs where you’re from. But I can tell you from the experience of loosing a friend and a Sgt, good can come from even the worst of situations. Long story short on 04/04/04 (Even I can remember that one) Sgt. Jeff Hewitt was ambushed attempting to serve commitment papers. Sgt. Hewitt heroically heard the subject alerted the other officers and then was shot and killed. Suspect then ran into the woods and took his own life.
That night forever changed me and my whole Dept. After doing this job for a while you become complacent and not always as alert as we should be. When something like this happens it brings you back to the reality that it could happen at anytime. I know now when officers from my Dept. answer a call they still have in the back of their mind what happened that night, and that may just save their life. I will be praying for the officer's family, you’re Dept. and you.
The fact that we are both LEO makes us brothers, being crazy about mustangs too; we may even have the same blood.
