1969 was the first year [and worst year] for the Traction-Lok differential. It has (4) large holes in the driver's side of the differential case casting [that are visible when the 3rd member is pulled from the rear end housing].
In '70, the Traction-lok's driver's side differential case half was revised and made stronger [solid] to remedy the problem of breakage in this area.
From '68 and earlier, the differential was the Limited-Slip.
If you were to open up the differential of a Traction-lok, you would see (4) tabs or 'ears' on the outer perimeter of the clutch packs.
If you did the same with a Limited-Slip differential, you would find (5) tabs. --to me, it sort of looks like the silhouette of a turtle.
Limited-Slip differentials will have (3) friction discs and a large Bellville conical spring that applies pressure to the clutch packs.
Traction-Loks will have (4) friction discs and a square block in the center of the differential with (4) coil springs that applies pressure against a steel plate that inturn applies pressure to the clutch packs.
