I had exactly the same thing happen - mine was coming out from the oil filler area - leaking heads. Had an engine re-build and now no problem - at least with the exhaust smell. Also had a similar problem with a leaking "donut" gasket that goes between the manifold and the exhaust pipe. A new gasket took care of it. Good luck.
