accerator pump. If it's a holley or early ford it may just need adjusting. Other wise the diaphram is defective. If it's a edlebrock or AFB then the pump will need replacing.
Another thing that can improve that sudden accerator action, if it's a Holley is to change shooters. Holley's from 390s up to 750s normally have no. 25 shooters. Going to a 28 makes a BIG difference.
