Two years ago I had some old standard XC 3-pin bindings mounted on new backcountry skis at REI in Santa Monica. Their head technician knew what he was doing, but the other staff were clueless -- they wanted to charge me a higher price for mounting alpine touring / ski mountaineering bindings, even though the bindings were simple three-screw XC 3-pins (the fact that the skis were Alpina Backcountrys seemed to confuse them). I had to argue quite a bit before they charged me the correct price for 3-pins.
