Posted by jdb ********** Sunday morning came with sunny skies. The [snow] gate was closed, as well as the I-5. So it meant that the team had to go out and ski some more. With approx. 18" of snow since Friday night, it was a difficult decision to decide where to go. Some went high, some went low, but no matter where we went it was pure powder. I can not recall having such great snow conditions in many years. Note that occasionally the Forest Service will close a snow gate on the access road due to heavy snow and delayed availability of plows, as noted in the report above. On weekends with winter weather, the ski patrol advises the public to call the Mt. Pinos Ranger District for up to date road conditions: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/lospadres/contact/ Think snow! This information is informal in nature and should not be used for trip planning. Always check with Federal weather forecasts as well as the local National Forest ranger office for up to date information and recommendations. http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/getzone.php?sid=lox&zone=caz053title=Ventura+County+Mountains

As reported by the Mt. Pinos Nordic Ski Patrol:
The snow at the top was outrageous. We were met with 10-12 inches of new powdery snow on Saturday morning. It snowed on and off all day with it socked in and snowing hard by 1700. By the time we left at 1930 hrs. another 5-6 inches had fallen on the road.
As the day progressed, the skies darkened. By 1100 it was snowing hard again and the roads had not been plowed from the day before. The decision was made to keep the mountain closed for the day and to shut down Nordic base. It was a great ride down with plenty of snow on the road and a near white-out. I have no doubt that the snow will be around for a while.
