They are not a purebred breed when compared to a Rottie or a Doberman . Both of which was created by modern man those breeds were created then the standard was written.. The CAO ALABAI Koochee Gamper Nagazi Tobet are natural occuring breeds in Central Asia All part of the same genetic gene pool as per DNA testing. In which the genetic markers are many .Technically if wanted they can be sub divided into different breeds. Since most Central Asia was kept under Russian COld war control. Cultures are just now starting to lay claim to their land and religon and now dogs. Alabai's have to have famous Turkmen dogs in the bloodlines from both sides to be a true alabai. Only from Turkmenistan, I did not know that when I bougth Alabai.org years ago. I dont have any Alabai lines in my dogs thus I dont use the name. If I did the experts would ask me for the names of the famous dogs u find on the link i posted. My lines are Shepherd dogs of Central Asia Who most have not seen show rings were used as working dogs for factories and mink farms. Some are koochee lines some are Tobet lines. Either way CAS dog is the only name I can use without be a hypercrite, Even when compared to the Modern Caucasian Ovcharka , TM and ASD. These 3 breeds started as landraces aboriginal dogs fur to selective breeding now are more of a Purebred in a sense . DNA study showed the CO has less genetic variety when compared to the others in the CAS lines. Often we see adds for Ovcharka for sale or Alabai for sale and it is just a backyard breeder finding a key word to market the dogs. Aziat is the short version many Russians use. I love the OLD Russian USSR working lines cause they worked first, were shown once at year in exhibition , and if "tested" with another dog it was ONE time since the value of the dog was vital back then. Sadly today many who inbred on the Alabai lines do it for profit and do NOT work the dogs. Alabai lines all have very famous dog figthing lines in them, and without proper old world selection today, they simply produce a HUGE , non working aggressive dog that looks and acts nothing like the old dogs of Alabai fame. Who yes were fighting champions but champions that were returned back to the sheep and pack dogs. The male used in this line i posted is a WOLF hound can run down a lyke in a heart beat. I am interested to see what he produces. Thanks for asking the question.
