Tosa Inu Posted by Mary on April 24, 2009, 11:47 am I took in Japanese Bull Mastiff that was born in Miyagi Mastiff Kennel House in Okinawa,Japan on April 24,2007. The Serviceman who bought him and shipped him here didn't want him anymore. He was passed around to several homes. No one wanted to keep him cause he's big. He will stay with me forever. He is the most wonderful dog--with kids, other dogs (his side kick is a 25 lb beagle) he goes to Petco and Petsmart stores.Here comes the but--I have a large fenced in yard that he loves--but he barks alot at the same people he see everyday.I don't want to make him not guard the house, but how do I get him to bark less.Will he get better once he's been here longer?  Post a Response

My experience is that it will be hard for you to instill less barking in him. Out of my 3, one of my females is a barker. I beleieve this is/was because she was less confident than the others. She is doing much better after putting in puppy bootcamp. She use to bark at a strong wind. Now it's mostly at other animals or a stranger at a distance. It will be hard, but perhaps he/she will grow out of it. Eddie  Post a Response

Compared to other breeds the Tosa is considered less of a barker than guardian breeds since it was not bred to guard compared to the level of LGD breeds etc. What type of fence do u have ? Now that I have 10 dogs I put up bluffs barriers that block their view of the entire road. Someone comes direct in they can see them. But it reduced my barking by 50 percent. Also he may slow down with age when he feels he is safe there. Being to several homes u never know what happened with him. Pls post some pics I also dont leave them all out at disk I take all females in by a certain time. When inside I use white noise so they dont hear every peep or sound.  Post a Response
