First, if you adopted the dog, you may be contracted to do it within a specific time - that would basically negate anything else. Second, larger dogs, it may not be a bad idea to wait until after the first heat cycle PROVIDED you can ensure that there is absolutely NO WAY a male dog can get at her to breed her and you are willing to deal with three weeks of potential heck. There have been worries brought up and some vets are noticing it too, that spaying too young may have physical and behavioral ramifications. But waiting through a first heat can also have issues such as risk of "pyo", slight increase of mammary tumors later on in life (though how many breeders never see this in any of their broods who are spayed later in life) and of course, unwanted pregnancy in a dog too young physically and behaviorally to handle it. So weight the pros and cons. But with a larger dog, it may not be a bad idea to wait until closer to a year to spay her if you can handle a heat cycle.  Post a Response

She already had vaginitis because of the infantile vulva but since he didn't recognize it, he proceeded with the spay. When her vaginitis didn't go away we ended up at a reproduction specialist who told me had she gone thru her first heat she would have matured and the infantile vulva would have fixed itself. She had to have plastic surgery to fix it.  Post a Response

You ahve to be SO careful, last dog I had in heat was in a crate or on a leash, ONLY. Some dogs have "clean" heats, and unless you are very aware, may not notice. That said....... I wait until my dogs are 10-12 months old. I adopted a catahoula years ago, she was spayed at 8 weeks, and while she is now very healthy and 11, active, and looks and acts like a 4 year old, she is fine boned, narrow in the chest and head, when they spay that young, they tend not to develop fully, as a result of decreased hormones. However, education regarding the pros and cons of altering at different ages has to be weighed. This needs to be done with consulting with a vet and other research - current research.  Post a Response

I even have a book from the 50s that says sterilization leads to adverse behavioral and health problems. People forget vets these days are largely out of touch with animals ESPECIALLY when it comes to behavior. Latest research suggests a decision should be made after consulting with a vet. It was a good, unbiased article, imo. I especially appreciated that it was written by a vet, included references and published in a respected journal. Just seems to hold a bit more weight than the articles written by Joe Schmo I was a bit worried that it would have me afraid to spay my puppy but in our situation after reading this article I don't feel there is a large risk for health or behavioral issues as the direct result of a spay at around 6 mos as per my discussion with my vet.
