Why did you choose the breed thAT U DID? Posted by Biggino on May 1, 2008, 1:35 am 69.67.163.172 I personally had pits from the start, weren't good enough guardians switched to ambulls love them but still were missing the threat display of the original guardian breeds that i was looking for, so I was looking for a large intimidating dog that was naturally terretorial that was able to handle his own if another dog attacked it so I chose the presa  Post a Response

When I got my first house, I wanted a larger dog. I narrowed it to a list of five breeds that would fit my needs and whose needs I could make. Most were Molossers. I ended up getting a cross of one because rescue groups were not contacting me back, phone #'s had never been updated, etc. But I met a rescue person who had one of the nonMolosser breeds I was looking at and ironically, happened to be a Newf cross as well. When we moved again, I wanted a larger guarding breed that would be moderate energy but tolerant of kids but willing to engage if needed. We got a Great Pyr. Our next dog will probably be a Leavitt/Olde English or a Great Dane. Since I am a dog trainer as well, I have worked with many common and rare breeds in the best and worst homes.  Post a Response

Then when my husband and I were dating he wanted a Shar Pei or English Bulldog, mainly because he thought they looked cool. I ended up getting him a Shar Pei, he was the sweetest sickly boy and unfortunately he had a short life(I put him down at 1 1/2 years). While we had the Shar Pei(whom had MAJOR separation anxiety) we decided to get him a friend and my husband really wanted a Rottie. I was not too keen on the idea but told him fine but the dog HAD to be trained so I could handle him. While my then boyfriend was deployed I found a Schutzhund club and started training Thor to surprise him. Shortly after he returned we ended up getting another rott puppy. Both rotties died at 8 years of age to cancer, they were both healthy and active until cancer took over. My hubby was so distraught and didn't want another dog for awhile. He came home from work one day and said he knew what kind of dog he wanted next. When he told me he wanted a Presa Canario I started researching the breed. I soon discovered this was not the breed for us at the time since we had young kids and I came across the Cane Corso. The Corsi is more fitting for a family with kids and after researching the breed and talking to TONS of people we decided that this was the breed for us. I have fallen in love with this breed and have decided that this is the one for us. I still love the other breeds of dogs we have owned but there is a BIG soft spot for the Corsi that the other breeds can not fill.  Post a Response

I love the rare mastiffs and didn't really have a preference other than I needed a female, preferrably a puppy because of my geriatric male Akita and cats. Long story short when I heard about a Presa/Corso mix in rescue I didn't hesitate.  Post a Response

They are so sweet and goofy. They love people and usually get alnog with other dogs. Then they have a protective side to them, but not too protective to where I feel I have to take a lot of extra precautions with strangers. They're just right. We chose to get a pug as our first dog back when we were in an apartment and wanted a small companion dog to fit our living situation, but not a "foo-foo" one. Pugs are a lot of dog in a small package, as they say. He's my miniature mastiff.  Post a Response

Posted by Biggino on May 2, 2008, 1:36 am, in reply to "Re: Why did you choose the breed thAT U DID?" 69.67.163.132 I love boxers I had one before, I just don't like the way some of them look on this side of the continent they look too scrawny then the ones I saw in germany and Poland, by the way when I was in Warsaw PL boxers were easily the most popular dog if anyone had a larger sized dog it usually was a boxer,lots of people said exacly that that they felt they children were safe from foes but also from their own dog when they owned a boxer.( lots of GSD even average ones had too much prey there, and roots had a bad rep built up because of incidents) the right ones can be very good for sport( schutzhund,ring,psa etc)  Post a Response

I had Rotts for 20 years and got tired of the health problems. I wanted a guardian breed/something short hair/overall quiet dog (not hyper or always busy)/something intimidating if I am walking at 6:00 am alone but temperament balanced to "raise to the occasion" and discovered the Presa almost 10 years ago. Long story short, we never gave him up, that was over 3 yrs ago and he's here to stay, we were never able to part with him, terrific male that was almost sent to an early unnecessary grave like so very many others. The Presa is another breed that has gone through a big phase with the phoney image perpetraitors (The spelling was intentional) who wanted a breed larger than a pitbull for the same reasons. These type of owners have scathed the breed like the rest of them, here in my area Rotties aren't even known as such, they're called ghetto dogs. A shame for such a great breed.  Post a Response

Posted by Heidi on May 5, 2008, 11:25 am, in reply to "Why did you choose the breed thAT U DID?" 67.158.130.141 I had pits as well, never bred them just companions, I had bought two pups and one was stolen out of the yard ( got her back a month or so later ) and caught the other one in the act of being stolen ( neighborhood teens ), had seen a neo in a dog book, found a breeder and went and checked them out, brought home a 6 month old black b###h and that was the start of it all, I never had another dog stolen after that The same kids did attempt to take the neo, she was only about 9 months or so and hadnt come into her own as far as guardian traits go, not really sure what happend ( I heard it but didnt see any of it ) but I heard down the grapevine that we had cujo living with us lmao  Post a Response

I've heard of everything from a Pom to adult Rott being stolen and that would make me psychotic.  Post a Response

I have never had a neo taken, the babies would be the most likely just because 8 week old neos love everyone lol now if the mama was close that would be a different story, I cant see any of my current neos allowing themselves to be snatched, now on the other hand my bloodhounds would be too happy to leave with someone, they have no loyality what so ever leave a hound unattended and you will be on the hunt for the scenting hound  Post a Response
