Bad, bad reaction to food. Posted by Methodical on April 3, 2008, 4:18 pm 72.153.167.108 Anyone ever have a dog have a bad reaction to Merrick dog food? I did a slow switch to the Wilderness blend, with them on just that a day or two ago. Today, both of them had a terrible bout of the runs and one was vomiting a lot. Vet check says they're fine, so I didn't get a bad batch or anything. Before I got my male Anatolian x Leon he was fed nothign but Beneful and Purina junk, and my Aussie has had everything from raw to natural kibble ... why this reaction? Ideas?  Post a Response

There is also a possibility that your dogs are alergic to something in there - though since they are not related, I would not be as fast to jump to this but it is a possibility. Now you said slow change - over how much time and how did you do the change? There could still be a bad batch out there eventhough your dogs dis check out fine. Not all dogs will die from a bad batch of food. Also, depending on how the food was stored, it could have become contaminated. Moisture that gets into an open bag can lead to mold or fungus growth (and not all growth will be visible). How are you storing the food? Now there is also the chance that it was not the food at all and the food just is a coincidence. There is a chance the dogs both got into something in your yard that you were not aware of. When I was a child, we had a drunk down the street who would wander through a couple back yards and throw raw chicken wings into our yard. We ccould not figure this out until the guy was caught in the act. Shortly after moving, a dog my mother had developed an intentinal blockage. Peach pit. My mother has various allergies to fresh fruits and peaches are one so there were only canned peaches if any in the house. The pit was carried over by a squirrel and buried in the yard it was assumed. There are lots of things that can cause a reaction.  Post a Response

His change was slightly less gradual than hers, seeing as how he came to me recently, but he is quite thin and has needed better food. He's also smaller than his breeds by a bit... never fed right. His took a week and a half, 1/4 for three days to 1/3 for three days to 1/2 to whole. Hers took about three weeks, because she tends to be more sensitive. I store the food in the sealed bag, inside a sealed box, away from all possible water sources. Not sure what went wrong here.  Post a Response

But Precious small spayed runt had runny stools . Too much protein I guess. We tried Nature Recipe Teddy and Cryus got bad hot spots- all else did fine. Now we are trying Canidaie and Breeders choice. Both seem to be working out no issues YET. Ran out of fresh lamb from our farm so we need a good quality dog food. Ive come a long way of 15 years ago with Snoopy feeding Pedigree./ But yet he did live long and juse had a dry coat from that food.  Post a Response

All three dogs had the runs, no vomiting. Fortunately the younger two dogs made it outside, unfortunately our 13 year old Akita presented me and my wife with several hours of cleaning. I immedaitely swiched them back to their usual Pro-Plan and the problem was solved. I did return the Merrick and was given a full refund. The ingredients in Merrick dog foods look awesome, however maybe their to rich or they had some bad batches. I noticed that it had a pretty strong fishy odor.  Post a Response

I guess some dogs just can't do that much salmon, maybe? I switched them over to Tiberwolf now. They seem to be doing better this way. My only problem now is getting him to gain weight. It has been about a month now since I adopted him, and he is still bony and skinny. He should weight 90+, but he is only hovering at about 70. When I got him, he was 62 pounds. No parasites, no thyroid problems, no nothing. Vet is not sure why. Know of any good foods that will fatten this skinny guy up? He seems happy otherwise, but it always bothers me when I feel all of those ribs. I feed the right amount for his projected weight, not his current weight.  Post a Response

It was just them, I guess. Interesting that both my dogs, completely different breeds with different types of food history had the same reaction. Very odd. But, they are both liking the Timberwolf now, so hopefully I won't have this problem again. (As long as he stops trying find the cat food... he LOVES that stuff! )  Post a Response

Some dogs are just naturally skinny. My sister has tried for years to get weight on her Terv - he looks starving, perfectly healthy but just does not eat a lot and does not gain weight. I would love a tad more weight on my pups. I have upped their food already. Next step will have to be a high energy food for them! They are in constant motion and burn right through food.  Post a Response

This guy is a flaming ball of energy outdoors. Indoors, not at all. You'd be amazed he was alive half the time. But outside ... wow. He can MOVE. He keeps the Aussie on her toes, and I though she was a quick one. Yet somehow, she has managed to stay a little fat thing. She should weigh 45, but she has an extra ten pounds on her. I guess I need to have two different diets going on ... he needs to gain, she needs to lose. As soon as the next foster comes in (possibly a dogo x with allergies) it'll be three special diets!  Post a Response
