Why do dogo's have such a bad rep Posted by Patric on March 26, 2008, 11:25 am 80.162.39.227 I've had an interest for molosser-type dogs since I was about 14. I'm 22 now and I have a beautiful English staffie that is a little over 3 years old. I love all dogs of this type and I'll probably have dogs for the rest of my life, since I grew up around them as well. A dog which I've always liked is the Dogo Argentino. However, here in Denmark they have a pretty bad reputation; not just amongst the general population but amongst other owners/breeders of muscle dogs as well! Amstaff enthusiasts (pits are illegal here) etc. all claim that the dogo is a breed with a mindset that is vastly different than that from, say, a Staffordshire bull terrier or an American bulldog. I've been told many a times by friends, whom also have Staffies, that a Dogo can be decidedly dangerous if not given the proper training and upbringing. Doesn't that go for most breeds, though, I respond. But then I'm told that this breed has an "extra edge" and thus is more craving as far as upbringing goes. From my own personal experiences, I can say that the dogo argentino's I've met have all been very mellow and social dogs. Sure the size of the animal might scare you off, but I still have a very hard time believing that these dogs are any worse than any other breed. Also, if you combine a dog with an irresponsible owner and trouble happens... The image of the whole is based on the actions of the few. So if you have a bad Dogo owner who allows the dog to be an issue people will assume ALL Dogos are bad.  Post a Response

What made me react about the dogo thing however, was that these negative responses came from people who themselves have pit bull-like dogs (mostly amstaffs or ambull which are very popular here albeit demonized unfortunanetly). You might think that these people would be more informed about things, but many of them still claim that the dogo argentino is in a different league. When I told my veterinary that I was thinking of buying one more dog, she recommended me to look into breeds such as the Bull Terrier or any Bulldog (whether it be Brittish or American) but when I mentioned the Dogo she basically said that this breed would be "too much to handle". She's a veterinary so she should know what she's talking about, and she does not have prejudices about Pit Bulls etc., but I still can't see why a Dogo would differ so much in its mentality from any other dog, given the right upbringing and training.  Post a Response

It is not covered - even if the vet goes on to specialize in dog behavior. Most vets learn about dogs through their clients, the media, etc. An exceptional vet will research the dog breeds their clients have if needed. Most vets do not. My vet fears Neos. When I joked about getting one, he said one owned by me he would trust but none other...  Post a Response

Ser de en hund med større muskler end en gravhund kan det kun være en dødsensfarlig kamphund! Folk er direkte dumme... Desværre!! En dogo er en god hund der skal opdrages som alle andre dominante racer. Alle racer der ikke bliver opdraget ordentligt er potentielt farlige. Det gælder også labradoren. Men hvem har skylden? Hunden? Nej, ejeren!!! Få dig en Dogo, opdrag den godt, vis det ER en god race og luk munden på de folk der siger det de gør! Det eneste punkt den adskiller sig fra andre hunde af molossoid oprindelse er dens store frygtløse jagtlyst. Det skal tøjles. Husk på, den bliver brugt til jagt på puma og vildsvin i sit hjemland. Jeg har heller aldrig købt de røverhistorier der florerer omkring dogo'en...jeg følger bare mine egne følelser omkring emnet, og i det her tilfælde synes jeg, ligesom dig, at det er noget bullcrap at fyre af om hvor psykotisk og ustyrlig hunden er; har haft hunde hele mit liv og selvom jeg aldrig har haft en dogo så kan jeg næsten garantere at det er noget mundlort at fyre af (undskyld sproget men folks ignorance kan gøre mig virkelig vred). Men helt klart, jeg står fast i min plan om at udvide familien med en Dogo en gang i fremtiden, ved at der er gode avlere her i Danmark også. Har du selv en?  Post a Response

Tvivler på at de er gode dogos i DK, ikke engang i Europa...Det er mest show-hunde der er blevet opdrættet for synets skyld uden at tænke på temp. Hvis du vil have en ÆGTE dogo,spørg efter Dogoman på dette board eller på dette http://members.boardhost.com/bandog/ Han bor godt nok i Argentina, men man skal desværre uden for EU for at finde gode hunde... I have never owned one, but have found them to be very good dogs. We owned Shar Pei for years and heard the same thing about how they are mean spirited dogs. These days, any dog that exhibits working characteristics are labeled as "rough", "tough" or "bad" dogs. I had no problem showing Dogos that I had only been introduced to moments earlier. The breed appeared to be very calm, stable and sweet to me, but I have a West Highland White Terrier, which prepares me for any rough working breed (we also have two Central Asians and a Shar Pei.) My experiences with the breed were all positive. Good Dogo owners had good Dogos. Like any serious working breed, if the owner has neither the inclination nor ability to be a good working breed owner, they should get a house cat. Dave  Post a Response

The dogo IS in a totally different league than a pit. You can EASILY ruin a dogo and create a monster if in the wrong, inexperienced hands. Pits are pretty forgiving if you f*ck up, dogos arent.  Post a Response
